State tax collection figures released Friday made April look like the big economic turnaround month Georgians have been waiting for. But it turns out the state was just more efficient at cashing income tax checks due in the middle of the month. Tax collections shot up 34.5 percent, or $452 million, from April 2007. For the fiscal year, which ends June 30, that puts the state up 4.7 percent over last year, more than enough to make the $20 billion fiscal 2007 budget.
